Blog Journal #6

My initial experience with Diigo was not very good. Primarily because it simply didn't work when I first tried to use it. Now that I have actually gotten the site to work, I don't really have any strong opinion toward it. I don't really picture myself using it a great deal in the future, but I don't feel like my time was wasted with it either.

So far I have only really done blogging as part of this class. Because of that, I don't have a strong opinion on whether or not I like blogging either. I haven't really learned a whole lot, besides how to use this one specific blogging site. This is also not something I can picture myself using a lot in the future.

As for a Web 2.0 source I would like to use in future classrooms, that would probably be Khan Academy. The biggest reason for this is that I actually used it when I first started using technology to learn in 6th grade, though pretty much exclusively for math classes. Since then, it has been consistently updated year after year, and still going strong today with a variety of subjects to learn. My only true complaint is that it's not the most interactive site in the world, though the videos they provide do all have comment sections, so there's that.

Blog Journal #5

I would not describe myself as a social media type, so my experience with Twitter has been minimal to the point where the only reason I even got an account was that it was a requirement in the class. I haven't, nor do I plan to interact with many people on the platform unless it was a requirement. Despite the drama surrounding it, I don't have anything against Twitter personally. It's just not really my thing in general.

There's no denying that there is a digital divide in the world, between those who use technology every second that they're awake, and those who would be lucky to use it at all. There are several definite causes, such as differences in income. There are many families who upgrade their phones annually when they really don't need to, and others who have to share a single laptop, if they even have one. There are plenty of other causes as well that get controversial and political, so I won't go any further with that.

As for academic software I would want to implement, I can't really say this with any sort of promise because education isn't my major, but if it was, I would like to implement some of the programs we're using in this class. Canva is a big one, particularly for student-designed flyers due to its ease of use and multitude of options at their disposal. I would also absolutely implement Kahoot in some way, simply because it's fun both for the instructor and the students. Otherwise, I'm not sure how I would go about this, because once again I'm not a teacher nor do I plan to be at this time.

Blog Journal #4

For Standard 1: Communication and Collaboration, you must identify a wide variety of digital tools used for that, as be able to conduct basic keyboard searches and exchange information with teachers and other students. You must also use technology as a means of solving problems and provide and accept constructive criticism to and from others. As for if I meet these requirements, I would probably need a bit of work. I can identify digital tools and conduct searches easily enough, but I'm not sure if I could really fulfill all of the requirements involving collaboration.

Up next, I chose a resource for grade 2 English and selected one of the resources. The one I chose was Cool Context Clues, an interactive tutorial where students must help Pat the Penquin find the meanings of unknown words. I chose this because it appears to have a level of interactivity that I can appreciate. Helping a character find out what certain words mean is potentially a lot more interesting and engaging than just a simple lecture on them.

Doing basic Google searches is a relatively simple task, but if you want to go more advanced, it's a little beyond that. You can add or subtract words to narrow down your results, such as dog -ball to show dogs without a ball in sight. Additionally with image searches, you can also select a specific color, image type, and even usage rights. Advanced searches can also do wonders in finding something very specific that you need. Also, do yourself a favor and turn safe-search on.

Copyright means the exclusive legal right, usually given to the originator or assignee to print, publish, film or perform. Many properties enter into the public domain decades after the creator passes away, meaning they have no such restriction. Copyrighted material can still be used without any permission required in limited quantities if it falls under fair use, when only brief excerpts are used.

Student privacy is important to have, as really anyone can see what anyone else is up to at all times if they look hard enough, so extra security is a must. As for decreased productivity, I would say the main cause of it is students not being engaged enough with the course material. If the course material is engaging enough, the odds are good that they'll end up being more productive than they would be otherwise.

While making my newsletter, I found out that I could do all sorts of things I never thought I could do before. Some things as simple as changing the page color, and as tricky as pasting images in word without the application freaking out when you do so. Canva was also a great help in creating the banner, and I'm actually considering to use it more in the future, even outside of school.
